If you’ve ever fallen down a TikTok rabbit hole of gua sha tutorials and jawline-sculpting hacks, you’re probably familiar with the phrase “lymphatic drainage”.
But while at-home tools are great for daily upkeep, a true lymphatic drainage massage is a whole different experience – part science, part soul work, and nothing like your average spa treatment.
Here on the Gold Coast, lymphatic therapist Thaisy Bonilha is one of the best. With over 10 years of experience across massage therapy, reflexology and women’s health, there was no one better equipped to help me understand what lymphatic drainage is all about.
“In Brazil, where I’m from, lymphatic drainage is a regular part of wellness – many people have it weekly, especially after surgery or before traveling,” she says. “My approach combines breathwork, visceral massage, Chinese reflexology points on the hands and feet, and nurturing touch to activate the parasympathetic response.
“Since moving to Australia, I’ve been offering this treatment for over a year and it has become one of the most powerful tools in my practice.”
Eager to learn more, I booked in with Thaisy for a full body lymphatic drainage massage at SSKIN Robina. Here are 10 things I learned.
The clinic is basically a Vogue Living spread
We’ll get to the massage in a minute, but first: a moment for the clinic. From the plush reception to the chic treatment rooms (and yes, even the bathrooms), SSKIN Robina is all soft lighting, polished minimalism and perfectly chosen colours. You’ll want to move in.
Proper preparation is crucial
At-home lymphatic tools can be helpful, but if you don’t open your main lymph nodes first, you’re just pushing fluid into a blocked system. And this process requires an anatomical understanding that’s hard to gain from a 45-second TikTok video. “Think of it like opening the drain before letting the water flow,” Thaisy says. “As trained therapists, we understand the anatomy of the lymphatic system, the location of lymph nodes, and how to adapt the technique to individual needs.”
It’s not your typical massage
Less kneading and deep tissue pressure, lymphatic drainage is gentle, rhythmic, and incredibly intentional. I could quite literally feel Thaisy moving the toxins where she needed them to go. “It’s not about pressure or intensity,” she says. “It’s about intentional, informed support.”
Stomach massage feels… interesting
Visceral massage (hands-on therapy with a focus on our organs) is a big part of the process, and while it felt unusual at first, it wasn’t uncomfortable. Our hot tip? Definitely visit the bathroom before your appointment.
Ayurveda plays a big role
Before we even started, Thaisy asked about my diet, sleep (dreams included), mindfulness habits, and movement – then wove breathwork into the massage itself. “I’ve been studying and practicing holistic therapies for over a decade, and I’ve developed my own method – a fusion of technique, intuition and care,” she says. “When we address the root cause – stress, diet, poor sleep, emotional tension – the effects are much more sustainable.”
Your legs are Toxin HQ
Thanks to gravity, fluid and toxins tend to build up in the legs, which is why Thaisy always starts there. Before the massage began, she pressed on my legs to show me the water retention – likely the result of long hours spent at a desk. And as I left, she encouraged me to elevate them, above my head, for 10-minutes to help them drain even better.
One session isn’t a magic fix
Yes, you’ll feel lighter, calmer, and less puffy right away, but lymphatic health relies on consistency, hydration, and lifestyle changes for lasting results. “A myth about lymphatic drainage is that one session (or a quick at-home routine) is enough to ‘detox’ the body,” she says. “Over time, consistent lymphatic drainage supports immune resilience, hormonal regulation, clearer skin, and emotional balance.”
There’s more to it than beauty benefits
While it’s great for reducing bloating and puffiness, regular lymphatic drainage can also support hormonal balance, digestion, immunity, and even emotional wellbeing. “It’s so much more than a beauty treatment – it’s a therapeutic journey,” Thaisy says. “One client came to me with chronic constipation, fluid retention, dull skin, and low energy. After just a few treatments, her digestion improved, puffiness reduced, and she regained her vitality. But the most powerful shift was emotional. Through breathwork, she accessed childhood memories related to food and body image. Watching someone reconnect with themselves at that level is the reason I do this work.”
Pre- and post-treatment habits matter
Before: skip caffeine, heavy meals, and intense workouts. After: drink plenty of water, keep moving gently, and rest so your body can process and eliminate toxins. “After your session, your body will begin eliminating toxins through the bloodstream, filtered by the liver and kidneys,” says Thaisy. “Support this process with hydration, light movement, and rest.”
It’s part science, part soul work
Thaisy’s method blends anatomy, breathwork, reflexology, and an intuitive, nurturing touch that leaves you feeling not just physically lighter – but more connected to yourself. “It’s not just about results,” she says, “it’s about reconnection. And when we reconnect with our bodies, everything else begins to flow.”
