Today, Friday May 26, is National Sorry Day – a day that acknowledges what is perhaps our greatest national shame, the Stolen Generations, and begins National Reconciliation Week.
Since 1998, National Sorry Day has been held to remember and acknowledge the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their homes, communities and families. It’s followed by a program of National Reconciliation Week events, that shine a spotlight on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their stories.
This year, the theme for National Reconciliation Week is ‘Be a Voice for Generations’. It encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise.
With that in mind, here are some of the National Reconciliation Week events and activities happening on and around the Gold Coast:
Visit Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre | Any time
There’s no time like the present to visit Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Learn about the Aboriginal history and culture of the Gold Coast and hear the Dreaming stories associated with the creation of Jellurgal (Burleigh Headland).
Skylore: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Astronomy | From Saturday May 27 at 9am
This exhibit, held at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, features some of Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders who have come together to share their star knowledge for the first time. It’s a free, permanent attraction, and is suitable for all ages.

National Reconciliation Week: Storytime and Craft Activity | Saturday May 27 from 10am to 11am
This special storytime and craft activity in recognition of Reconciliation Week is ideal for children aged 2-5 years old. While it’s a free event, bookings are required – just contact the Mt Ommaney Library on 07 3407 7010.

Indigenous Veterans’ Ceremony | Saturday May 27 from 11am
Despite being legally excluded from military service until 1949, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have served in every war and conflict since the Boer War. The Indigenous Veterans’ Ceremony, held in Brisbane’s Anzac Square, aims to recognise the invaluable contribution of our Indigenous service people to Australia’s Defence Force, both past and present.

Join a walk on country! Meet at one of two starting points (Whites Hill Reserve or kaggur-mabu/Mt Gravatt Lookout) and walk to the Holland Park Sports Club for a community event focused on connection and celebration.

Light Up Brisbane | Monday May 29 and Tuesday May 30
Brisbane’s most iconic bridges, buildings, and landmarks – including City Hall, the Story Bridge, and the Tropical Display Domes at both botanic gardens) – will light up in Aboriginal Flag and Torres Strait Islander Flag colours for National Reconciliation Week.

Street Fair on the Mountain | Wednesday May 31 from 11am to 2pm
Head up to Griffith’s Mt Gravatt Campus for this special edition street fair. You’ll find Indigenous market stalls, tribal dancers, a didgeridoo performance, an activity called ‘Be a Voice for your Generation’, Indigenous food tastings, food trucks and traditional music.
