While Cyclone Alfred might have put a dampener on our weekend plans, being stuck at home doesn’t have to be boring. Whether you’re waiting out the wild weather or bracing for potential power outages, here are ten ways to keep yourself entertained, productive and maybe even a little creative.
Read a book
There’s no better time to dive into that book that’s been gathering dust on your bedside table. Whether you prefer a gripping thriller, a beachy romance or a non-fiction deep dive, losing yourself in a good book is a great way to escape – without actually leaving your home.
Get moving with an at-home workout
Even if the gym is off-limits, you can still get your body moving – trust us, you’ll feel better for it! Try this no-equipment workout:
- 30 seconds of jumping jacks
- 10 squats
- 10 push-ups (or modified push-ups)
- 30-second plank
- 10 lunges (each leg)
Repeat 3-4 times
It’s quick, simple and will keep you feeling energised even while the storm rages on outside.
Do your taxes (yes, really!)
If reading that made your stomach drop, you’ve probably been putting off doing your tax return. We could potentially be house bound for the next two or three days, which is more than enough time for you to finally get on top of it. Future you will thank you! Even if you’re up to date, get started on this year’s. What else do you have do to right now?
Rediscover a forgotten hobby
Dig out those old art supplies, dust off your guitar or revisit a long-abandoned craft project. Whether it’s painting, knitting, writing or learning how to hacky sack (no judgement), getting back into a lost passion will make time fly.
Bust out a puzzle
Whether it’s a 1000-piece jigsaw, a crossword or a Sudoku challenge, puzzles are a great way to keep your brain busy while the wind howls outside. Bonus points if you get the whole household involved!
Play games
Classic board games and card games never go out of style, especially when we’re facing a potential power outage. Whether it’s Monopoly, Uno or a high-stakes round of poker, a little friendly competition can help pass the time – just try not to let it end in family drama (storming out of the house isn’t an option right now).
Declutter
If you’re stuck indoors, why not make the most of it? Organise your wardrobe, clear out that cluttered cupboard or finally tackle the “junk drawer” that seems to collect everything. A tidy space can do wonders for your mood.
Support local businesses online
Gold Coast businesses will be feeling the impact of Cyclone Alfred too, so why not show them some love? There are so many local boutiques, restaurants and markets that have online stores – treat yourself to something new and support your community at the same time. Not sure what to buy? Grab a gift card to spend when they reopen.
Enjoy a candlelit dinner
With power outages a possibility, why not embrace the darkness and plan a cosy candlelit dinner? Cook up a feast before the storm hits, set the table with your best candles and enjoy an unplugged meal with loved ones (or yourself!).
Make fun drinks
The prevailing advice from our cyclone-experienced friends up north? Stock up on drinks. Learning how to perfect your favourite cocktail (is a “Dark and Stormy” too on the nose?) is a productive and fun way to pass the time. No power? No worries. Even a simple juice or fizzy mix can feel fancy with a bit of imagination.
Stay safe, Gold Coasters!
