Mark your calendars, vintage lovers – May 17 is the first-ever International Vintage Store Day, and the Gold Coast’s thriving secondhand scene is the perfect place to celebrate.
Whether you’re a seasoned thrifter or just dipping your toes into the world of pre-loved fashion, this is your excuse to hit up the Gold Coast’s vintage stores, op shops and market stalls in search of one-of-a-kind gems.
To get you inspired, we’ve rounded up a few insider tips from local vintage store owners and style experts – the same ones keeping the Goldie cool, colourful and sustainable all year round.
Come prepared (but keep an open mind)
Mudgeeraba’s vintage queen and owner of The Sensory Boutique, Somer, shared a golden rule when we caught up a few months ago: “Having an idea of what you’re looking for definitely helps narrow down your options and makes the experience a lot more enjoyable. But also, keep an open mind!”
Vintage shopping isn’t like your typical retail experience. You might not find exactly what you’re looking for, but you could stumble upon something even better.
Wear clothes that are easy to change in and out of (some stores don’t have changerooms), bring a reusable bag, and set a loose budget – oh, and be ready to rummage.
Don’t just follow trends – find what speaks to you
As we found when we spoke to Sylvie, co-owner of Bad Days Vintage and Vinyl in Palm Beach, authenticity is everything. She really likes “to do things that stay true and authentic,” especially when setting up her stores.
“Nothing makes me happier than hearing people say they don’t know where to look, because there’s just so much to look at!” she says. “I want folks to come in and stay a while, have a chat, embrace all my finds and maybe hear my stories on where they came from.”
That ethos is common in the vintage community – instead of chasing trends, slow down and explore pieces that actually feel like you. Knowing that each piece comes with its own story makes owning it even more special.
Know your fabrics, and check for flaws
Vintage clothing has lived a life before you found it, which is a big part of its charm! But it pays to check garments carefully. Look for stains, loose seams, missing buttons and check the labels (if they’re still intact) to get a feel for fabric quality.
Hold things up to the light, and check every inch of the item when you’re trying it on. Store lighting can be deceptive.
And remember: any flaws or issues can be mended. As Sylvie told us, “That ugly 60’s sack dress in the most amazing paisley print can be easily turned it a cute fitted mini!”.
Talk to the store owners – they’re full of gold
If you’re shopping at curated vintage stores or markets, take the time to chat with the people behind the racks. Many local sellers are collectors themselves and can tell you the story behind a piece, or help you find something that suits your vibe.
Plus, you might score a heads-up on new stock drops or upcoming vintage markets. And even if you don’t, you’ll feel better about dropping a bit more cash on a quality item when you know how much time and expertise went into sourcing it.
Think beyond fashion
Don’t forget – vintage isn’t limited to clothing. Homewares, vinyls, books, jewellery and even toys are all better vintage, in our opinion. If you’re building a more sustainable home, shopping vintage is a brilliant way to furnish and add personality or find a unique gift.
