When Somer Cross, owner of The Sensory Boutique and pre-loved fashion fairy godmother, was approached by the founder of the Gold Coast & Hinterland Festival of Arts & Crafts with a challenge – to incorporate her preLOVED Rack Market with the festival – she knew exactly what to do. Because if fashion isn’t art, then what is it?

Cue: The Art of Fashion Parade, the fabulous Friday night runway-meets-market event that kicked off the festival in true Mudgeeraba style. Think: live fashion show, racks upon racks of dreamy vintage and pre-loved pieces, and a community coming together to celebrate creativity, sustainability and the power of a great outfit.

“We’re at a critical moment where sustainability and conscious consumerism are becoming central to conversations,” says Somer. “People are starting to see pre-loved fashion as not only more sustainable, but also a way to find unique pieces that set them apart from the mass-produced styles they see everywhere.”

Why pre-loved fashion is having a (very stylish) moment

Fast fashion is officially out. The planet has had enough, and so too has the trend cycle.

“The demand for pre-loved fashion has definitely been growing,” says Somer. “There’s a shift happening, especially among younger consumers who are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental and ethical issues surrounding fast fashion.”

Somer says there’s never been a better time to celebrate upcycled, vintage and second-hand clothing – not just for the planet, but for your wardrobe.

“Vintage and upcycled clothing offer unique, quality alternatives that tell a story and promote individuality,” she says. “Plus, it’s an opportunity to embrace a more sustainable mindset. The rise of social media and platforms like Depop, where people are curating their own vintage collections, has made it more accessible and fashionable than ever.”

And it’s not just the planet-conscious shoppers making the shift. Rising living costs mean more people are hitting thrift stores and markets (like Somer’s) – both out of necessity and chasing the thrill of the hunt.

What’s hot right now?

The 90s are definitely back – and they’re not being subtle about it. Baggy jeans, oversized blazers, lacy slips and grunge accessories are storming the streets (and the racks). But, Somer adds, sports luxe is still hanging on.

“There’s this interesting mix where people are either embracing the relaxed, sporty style or leaning into the edgier, vintage-inspired looks,” she says. “Both styles seem to be about comfort and personal expression.”

Why Mudgeeraba just works

“Mudgeeraba is a hidden gem,” says Somer. “The area’s growth over the past few years, especially with the influx of young families, new bars and restaurants, makes it an ideal place for events.”

And the best part? The community absolutely showed up. It wasn’t just about clothes – it was about connection, celebration and having a laugh while sipping something sparkling and eyeing off that upcycled denim number calling your name from the rack.

“Hosting the Art of Fashion Parade + Market was a chance to bring together locals who are eager for new, exciting events, and encourage people to get out of their postcode and experience something – and somewhere – new.”

And as for Gold Coast fashion in general, Somer says comfort is still king – but it’s slowly changing.

“Although the style often leans into comfort, we could definitely push the everyday with accessories or experimenting with layering,” she says. “I love the idea of adding a chunky necklace, a bold arm stack or some statement earrings to an otherwise casual outfit – it’s a fun way to take something basic like an oversized tee and runners and make it your own.”

Of course, there’s a thriving fashion community here that loves to support new events and ventures. Whether it’s a local market or a pop-up, Somer says there’s an eagerness for unique and creative experiences.

“I think as the fashion scene here continues to grow and evolve, there’s going to be even more room for people to step up their style game while still staying true to the relaxed, beachy essence that makes the Gold Coast so unique.”

Somer’s top tips for shopping pre-loved

1. Patience is key: It’s not always about finding something right away, but more about the thrill of the hunt and the joy of uncovering hidden gems. Taking your time to browse and explore every corner of the market is part of the fun!
2. Know what you’re looking for: Having an idea of what you’re looking for definitely helps narrow down your options and makes the experience a lot more enjoyable. Think about what your wardrobe is missing, or maybe that one item you’ve been eyeing for ages. Whether it’s a vintage leather jacket, unique accessories, or that perfect pair of jeans, knowing what you’re after can keep you focused and help you avoid getting overwhelmed by the variety of items.
3. But keep an open mind: Also, keep an open mind! Sometimes the most amazing finds are things you weren’t even expecting. It’s always worth trying something new or different. And don’t forget to check out accessories – they can completely transform an outfit.
