Looking for a beachside stay that takes you back to the good old days? These Gold Coast motels ooze old school charm, but with all of the modern luxuries.

Just 200-metres back from Miami Beach, The Shores – the little sister to the Surfers hotel of the same name – sits sparkling after its multi-million-dollar refurb. Perfectly encapsulating the retro yet modern charm that’s quintessentially Gold Coast, this motel offers suites of all sizes – from cosy studios to two-bedroom apartments. All are decked out with creature comforts like robes, luxe toiletries and picture-perfect fitouts.

Formerly the Palm Trees Motel, this Palmy institution made waves when it reopened its doors as The Mysa in 2021. But this seven-room motel is still an ode to the old Gold Coast, from the breeze blocks to the plastic loungers by the pool. Its name is pronounced ‘Mee-sa’, and it’s Swedish for ‘cosy’ – a reflection of the team’s dream to provide guests with a cosy stay on the Goldie.

Just down the road from The Mysa is another old favourite with a new look. Originally built in the 1960s, the Cheshire Cat was renovated and reopened at the start of this year, to great excitement. With its tiled plunge pool and tree-shaded terrace, the Cat offers guests places to come together – or, with their luxuriously-appointed, 60s-inspired rooms, enjoy some peace and quiet.

Just a short stroll from the beach, the Blue Heron Motel is another classic with a fresh twist. Lovingly restored by Hungarian husband and wife duo Karl and Andrew, this Mermaid Beach favourite now offers a charming blend of retro flair and modern comforts. With its inviting courtyard and relaxing pool area, guests can soak up the Gold Coast sunshine or retreat to their beautifully renovated rooms – which have been thoughtfully designed with a nod to mid-century style.

Perched on Bilinga’s golden sands, Tessa’s is a true retreat. With its relaxed, bohemian vibe and ocean views, it’s the perfect place to unwind in style. Originally a traditional beach shack, Tessa’s has been transformed into a chic boutique motel – complete with a magnesium pool, no less. The rooms are bright and airy, and the lush outdoor spaces are perfect for morning coffees or evening sunsets.

Just a stone’s throw from the airport, La Costa Motel is a charming throwback to classic beachside living. This 1950s-style motel has been beautifully refurbished, retaining its original charm while offering all the modern amenities today’s travellers expect. With its retro colour scheme, surfboards decorating the walls, and complimentary beach cruiser bikes for guests, La Costa brings a sense of nostalgia to every stay.
