With festival season well and truly underway and Christmas right around the corner, you’re probably consuming more alcoholic beverages than normal. Unfortunately, that means one thing and one thing only: you’re infinitely more likely to succumb to the Sunday scaries.
What are the Sunday scaries, you ask? According to Urban Dictionary…
Sunday Scaries (noun): “The feeling you have after a long week of work followed by a Saturday full of binge drinking, when Sunday hits and you question your entire existence. Typically characterized by lying in bed all day and both regretting past decisions and questioning your seemingly non-existent future. Thoughts like “I’m going to die alone” and “Will I ever get a job that I actually enjoy?” consume you for the entire day while you’re battling a hangover.”
It’s so much fun. Luckily, you don’t need to suffer inside all day. Try one of these activities instead to shake off the post-booze blues.
Visit a bathhouse
Nothing helps you sweat out a hangover like a visit to the sauna. Even better, why not follow it up with a dip in an ice bath? Soak Bathhouse in Mermaid Beach has everything you need to feel like your best self again, from magnesium pools to hot tubs and even massages. A little further south, Greenhouse the Bathhouse at Burleigh Heads offers similar services, plus a relaxing sun deck.
Go surfing
Salt water is one of the most effective ways to beat a hangover. Not like, scientifically speaking – just from past experience. Add to that the endorphin rush that exercise gives you and bam: hangover cured. You don’t even need to catch any waves, necessarily. Just grab your board, paddle out and soak up the sun (just maybe don’t float out there for too long since you’ll A) be pretty dehydrated already, and B) probably fall victim to sea sickness).
Go to the movies
If you really need to be in a dark room surrounded by snacks, at least make the effort to get out of bed and go to the movies. The more captivating the movie, the better – it will distract you from the grog horrors and give you something else to focus on. If you really don’t want to see anyone, why not head up to the Yatala Drive-In? You can BYO blankets and pillows while still enjoying cinema-quality popcorn and drinks. Perfect.
Do something wholesome
Perhaps you feel as though you need to counteract your wild Saturday with a wholesome Sunday. It’s all about balance, right? It doesn’t get much more wholesome than crafting, and there are some great places to get crafty on the Gold Coast. Located in Tugun, Pot Studios is a light, bright ceramics studio where you can get your hands dirty and throw some pottery. They’re open to walk-ins on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and their Sunday workshops can book out quite quickly – if you know you’re going to have a big night in a few weeks’ time, perhaps it’s worth booking in a session for the following day? If pottery isn’t for you, check out the assortment of activities on offer from the Craft Parlour instead.
Hair of the dog
If none of these ideas have banished the Sunday scaries, there may only be one thing left to do – just keep drinking. It’s certainly not ideal but sometimes, hair of the dog is the only cure. Rally your hungover mates and go to a brewery for some wholesome afternoon beers. You’ve earned it. These are our favourite breweries on the Gold Coast.
