Here at scout mag, we love all things travel and seeing the world – but we don’t necessarily love the impact travel has on said world. Given that Earth Day is coming up this Saturday (April 22, 2023), we thought we’d share some sustainable travel tips, courtesy of the travel experts at Reflections Holiday Parks.
“As a conscious traveller you can take a few simple steps to minimise your environmental impact and support sustainable tourism practices,” says Peter Chapman, General Manager of Marketing and Sales at Reflections Holiday Parks. “Earth Day is a way we can come together as businesses and individuals to support environmental protection.”
Peter has shared his top sustainable travel tips for anyone trying to be a more conscious traveller. Here’s how to minimise your carbon footprint on your next holiday…
- Choose eco-friendly accommodation: Peter says to look for accommodation with eco-friendly features like energy efficient lighting, low-flow showerheads and recycling programs.
- Reduce your carbon footprint: Consider using public transport or walking/cycling instead of renting a car. If flying interstate is a must, look out for airlines that have implemented sustainable practices or offer carbon offset programs. This can often be found while you checkout.
- Pack light: This is something you may not think affects your carbon footprint, but it does! According to GreenGuides.net, before you add in that extra pair of hiking boots, remember that the more weight on the plane, the more fuel it needs to burn.
- Support sustainable tourism: Choose tour operators and activities that support sustainable practices, such as responsible wildlife tourism, cultural tours, or eco-tourism. “We’re the only holiday park in Australia that has a Social Enterprise certification,” says Peter. “This means we reinvest into our 36 holiday parks and 43 community Crown reserves, which are vital habitats for animals and plants – not just playgrounds for regional communities and visitors.”
- Bring reusable items: Bring a reusable water bottle and coffee cup to avoid using disposable items. Peter says this is something Reflections Holiday Parks always reiterate to their campers on site, to help them reduce, reuse and recycle.
- Respect local wildlife: Do not disturb or feed wildlife and avoid purchasing products made from endangered species and their habitats.
- Conserve water: Take shorter showers and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
- Dispose of your waste: This is key for all conscious travellers moving around and respecting the grounds they’re on. “Leave no trace and take your rubbish with you, or use the bins and recycling outlets provided,” Pete says.
