Heading north for a short but sweet stay? Brisbane promises a good time, even if you’re not there for a long time. Here’s how to spend a day in Brisbane.
In the AM
Enjoy a morning walk along the river: Brisbane’s riverside boardwalks mean you can travel by foot from Portside into the city, and even back across the other side of the river to Kangaroo Point (not that you necessarily would… though it’s nice to know that you can). Your walk can be as long or as short as you like, and you can soak up the water views the whole time.
Go out for breakfast: Try to coordinate your route so that you end up in the Newstead/New Farm – the (unofficial) café capital of Brisbane. From Industry Beans to Bellissimo, not to mention Hellenika at the Calile Hotel, you’re seriously spoilt for choice in this neck of the woods.
During the day
Shop around West End: Weird, wonderful West End is a treasure trove – especially when it comes to shopping. Boundary Street alone promises hours of entertainment, whether you’re sifting through vintage shops or browsing boutiques. Don’t miss the iconic Bent Books at the southern end of the street.
Hit South Bank for lunch: Nearby South Bank has dozens of delicious restaurants to choose from. Whether you’re craving Italian, Mexican, burgers or a classic pub feed, South Bank has it all. Don’t miss the final days of Margarita Month at Mucho Mexicano, where you can grab $7.50 classic, coconut or passionfruit margaritas – or, all three for $21.
At night:
Go for drinks at Howard Smith Wharves: As night starts to fall, head back to the river – this time, to Howard Smith Wharves. It’s been the talk of the town since it opened in 2018, bringing fast favourites like Felons Brewing Co., Mr Percivals, Greca and Ciao Papi.
Dinner in the city: From Howard Smith Wharves, it’s just a quick walk into the city for dinner. If you fancy something fancy, Donna Chang’s delivers a delicious menu in a beautiful setting. For something more casual, Communa Cantina and Little Red Dumpling are just the ticket.
