Cyclone Alfred has finally passed – which means now is when the real work begins. In the aftermath of the wild winds, power outages and floods, our community has needed all the support it can get. From helping neighbours to backing local businesses, here are some simple but meaningful ways to lend a hand.
Shop local for essentials
Major supermarkets may still have empty shelves, but our small grocers, bakeries and corner stores are working hard to keep the community stocked. If you need food, toiletries or household items, check in with independent retailers first – they’ll appreciate your support now more than ever. A few of our favourites…

- Same Same: The grooviest bottled water you ever did see | Learn more
- Well Bread: The supermarket shelves were bare, but these guys got us through – and our guts were truly grateful | Learn more
Check in on your neighbours
Not everyone bounces back quickly after a storm, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Take a moment to knock on a neighbour’s door or give them a call to see if they need anything. A simple gesture can go a long way in times like these.
Donate directly to disaster relief
Many families will need help replacing lost or damaged items. Consider donating non-perishable food, clean clothes, bedding or toiletries to local charities assisting those affected. Direct donations ensure support reaches those who need it most, as quickly as possible.
Offer your skills and resources
If you’re a tradie, have a ute, or own tools like chainsaws or generators, your help could be invaluable. Post on local community noticeboards or Facebook groups offering assistance with clean-up, transport or repairs.
Redirect your spending to local businesses
Whether you need clothes, homewares or gifts over the next few months, choose to spend your money at local stores. Many small businesses will take a hit during the cyclone and would love your support as they recover.
