While women are killing it in professional surfing, being out on the waves on the Goldy can still feel like a bit of a boys’ club. That’s why these Gold Coast female surf groups are so important – and so much fun.
Groove Girls
We adore Groove Girls. This Gold Coast-based female surf group is all about empowering women of all ages, abilities and colours to fall in love with surfing.
”To me, Groove Girls is so much more than just a surf group,” says founder Stephanie Teixeira. “Our mission is not only to empower women in the surf, but also to tackle issues to do with gender equality, race and body resilience in and out of the water. We want women to feel safe and supported in an uplifting environment where they can unapologetically be exactly who they are.”
Surf Sisters
A new initiative by Surfing Queensland, Surf Sisters is a free program for women aged 18+. It’s all about improving your confidence by improving inclusivity and creating opportunities for women to get together on (and off) the waves. They offer in-person and online surf coaching for beginners and intermediates all over the Gold Coast – Main Beach and The Spit, Mermaid, Nobby, Miami, Palm Beach, Currumbin Alley and Kirra. You can even get involved in social competitions and club activities, if you’re keen. Did we mention it’s all free?
Surf Witches
If it’s a social atmosphere you’re after, look no further than Surf Witches. This registered not-for-profit boardriders club is based at the southern end of the Gold Coast and geared to women over 18. Not much of a surfer? No worries – they have zero expectations when it comes to your surfing ability (beyond basic surf etiquette and being able to swim). They put on fun, social club rounds for free, with prizes awarded based on fun, teamwork and best wipe-outs (to name a few). Their 2023 memberships are closed, but you can express your interest for 2024 on their website.
