Drop everything. The Star is getting set to host the ultimate ABBA tribute show, ‘Dancing Queen,’ just in time for New Year’s Eve – and you’re not going to want to miss it.
The show will attract locals and tourists alike, all flocking to Broadbeach to get into the end-of-year spirit and enjoy two hours of ABBA’s biggest hits.
We caught up with the show’s director Johnny Van Grinsven to find out more about what audiences can expect from the ABBA tribute show.
“This show has been touring globally since 1985, and it always attracts a fun crowd,” says Johnny. “It will no doubt be extra fun over the festive season.”
‘Dancing Queen’ will land on the coast after tours of New Zealand and Canada, bringing new cast member Brit Jess Driver – in the role of ‘Agnetha’ – along with it. Jess will perform with Australian Zac Coombs as Bjorn, South Africans Giselle Bouwer as Anni-Frid and André Behnke as Benny, and their live support band.
“The music and production, the fun and the energy from this amazing cast will have the audience dancing and singing,” says Johnny. “The show is for all ages, so it is a great way for friends and families to start the New Year or finish the old one! You can even dress up if you want. With the large dance floor, it will be a night to remember.”
Audiences can expect to hear all the ABBA classics, including ‘Mamma Mia,’ ‘Dancing Queen,’ ‘Waterloo,’ ‘Money Money Money,’ ‘Super Trouper,’ ‘SOS’ and so many more, all brought to life with world-class production.
“To take such a great music catalogue and deliver it to a high standard, you need to have great musicians and, most of all, amazing female vocals,” says Johnny. “Add a little rock ‘n’ roll and we just let the amazing music take control.
“This show is great because the original fans still love it, and there are new generations of fans who keep this magic alive.”
Dancing Queen: A Tribute to ABBA will perform at The Star Gold Coast theatre, Friday December 30 and Saturday December 31 2022 at 8.00pm.
