So much for the ‘Sunshine State’… If these last few weeks have taught us anything, it’s the importance of finding our own fun when the weather takes a turn for the terrible. Here’s what to do on the Gold Coast when it’s raining.
Go skydiving… sort of
Keen to skydive, but scared of heights? Look no further than iFly, the Gold Coast’s very own indoor skydiving experience. iFly takes the very best parts of skydiving and removes the risk – kids, teens, adults and even experienced skydivers love it.
Head to HOTA
Museums and art galleries are the ultimate wet weather activity, and HOTA (Home of the Arts) is the best on the coast. With two theatres, two cinemas, galleries and activity spaces, it’s the place to be when the rain sets in.
Get some retail therapy
The Gold Coast is home to some beautiful outdoor shopping centres – just take Pacific Fair and Harbour Town. But if you need to scratch your retail therapy itch when it’s raining, head to Robina Town Centre. It boasts all the brands you love under one convenient (and protective) roof.
If you’re going to be stuck inside, you may as well have something to show for it. Whether it’s a craft class at The Craft Parlour or a pottery session at one of our favourite local pottery studios, use the next rainy day to get crafty.
Escape your sorrows
Ever tried an escape room? You can in Southport. Escape Hunt was born in Singapore in 2013, offering escape rooms inspired by online games like Myst and Crimson Room. Now, you can get in on the fun right here on the Gold Coast.
Head to a brewery
What better way to wash away the bad weather blues than with some local craft beer? There are plenty to choose from here on the Gold Coast. Hole up out of the rain and work your way through their selection (and their delicious food menus).
Try something weird
From The Wax Museum to Infinity (a light-filled futuristic maze), Surfers Paradise is the city’s capital for all things weird – and wonderful. Who could forget about Ripley’s Believe it or Not Odditorium?
Head to Hijinx Hotel
It’s part of the Funlab family (alongside Holey Moley, Strike and Archie Brothers, to name a few), so you know you’re in for a good time. Situated in Surfers Paradise, Hijinx Hotel is a place to play – not stay – with challenge rooms and activities aplenty.
Go ice skating
When you need to beat the heat but you don’t want to brave an ocean swim, head to Gold Coast Iceland. This Bundall favourite hosts everything from kids’ parties to ice hockey, as well as lessons (for all ages) and casual skating sessions.
Catch a movie
We can’t believe we waited this long to mention the number one rainy weather activity – going to the movies. It’s a classic for a reason. Nothing beats loading your arms full of snacks and settling down into a cosy theatre chair for a few hours of solid entertainment.

Hit the arcade
Looking for an easy way to turn a rainy afternoon into hours of fun? Head to the arcade – and there are plenty to choose from. From Level Up in Broadbeach to Timezone at Surfers, Robina and Coolangatta.
