The calendar says winter, but the afternoons are telling a different story. Mornings are still brisk, but by 2pm you’re peeling off your knit and wondering if the water’s still too cold for an ocean dip. This weird in-between season – not quite winter, not yet spring – is perfect for one thing: a refresh.
Forget waiting until September to ‘spring clean’ your life. Here’s how to reset your mindset, your wardrobe, your movement habits (and yes, even those dusty New Year’s resolutions) before the new season officially begins.
Reboot your resolutions
Remember those goals you set back in January? Neither do we. If they’ve fallen by the wayside, you’re not alone – studies show most resolutions are abandoned by February. But the end of winter gives you a second chance to pick up where you left off – with less pressure and better weather.
Try this: choose one resolution to revisit – maybe it’s moving more, drinking less, or finally starting that side project. Make it smaller and more fun. Instead of “run 5km every morning”, go with “get outside three mornings a week”. Track your progress with a note on your fridge or your phone lock screen – but only to celebrate your wins, not guilt-trip over your failures.
Dress for the season you have
We’re calling it: This is the hardest time of year to get dressed. It’s 11°C at 7am, 22°C by midday, and your closet is in seasonal limbo. But you don’t need a whole new wardrobe – just a few clever swaps.
Our trans-seasonal styling tips…
- Layer like a local: A lightweight knit over a linen tank is your best friend. Bonus points for something you can tie around your shoulders later.
- Bare legs and big jumpers: Gold Coast chic. Try with boots or sneakers to stay balanced.
- Don’t pack away winter just yet: Instead, rotate in a few warm-weather staples like cotton shirts, wide-leg pants, and white tees.
Take your movement outside
It’s not quite beach weather, but it is the perfect temperature for outdoor workouts. Moving your body in the fresh air offers a n instant mood boost, and a great way to build consistency before spring/summer really kicks in.
Easy outdoor workouts to try this month:
- Sunset stairs: Find a local hill or staircase (Burleigh Hill and North Burleigh steps, we’re looking at you) and take a few laps at golden hour.
- Outdoor yoga: Pack a yoga mat and head to your nearest green space for some stretches or a short YouTube Pilates class.
- Ocean dips and brisk walks: If you’re brave, start your morning with a dip (or at least a power walk along the sand). The reward? Coffee, with a heaping dose of endorphins on the side.
Spring clean your mind (not just your cupboards)
Sure, a good closet clean-out is cathartic (and you should finally donate that holey, pilled cardigan). But August is also a great time to clear the mental clutter.
Reset rituals to try…
- Digital detox: Unfollow, unsubscribe, or just turn off your notifications after 8pm.
- Morning pages: Write a stream-of-consciousness journal for 5 minutes in the morning. Surprisingly therapeutic.
- Change your space: A new candle, a rearranged bookshelf, or fresh flowers can signal a seasonal shift – and spark a fresh mindset.
Romanticise the transition
Don’t rush into spring – stretch this slow emergence out. Buy the flowers, and the hot chocolate. Take the scenic route. Celebrate small shifts. Make porridge one day and smoothie bowls the next.
This is your seasonal soft launch. You don’t need a full makeover – just a little reset.
