If your Instagram feed has looked like a travel brochure these past few months, you’re not alone. Aperol spritzes, cobblestone streets, long lunches in Provence… it’s enough to make anyone start Googling flights.
But before you max out the credit card, let us remind you: not travelling can actually be a very good thing. In fact, a stay-at-home season might be just what you need.
Why stay put?
Aside from saving a small fortune (those flights are not getting any cheaper), skipping the big trip means no jet lag, no lost luggage and no panic when your passport’s buried somewhere in the bottom drawer.
Plus, let’s be real: we live on the Gold Coast. People literally fly across the world to holiday where we already are.
Turn your backyard into a playground
Instead of pining after piazzas, start saying yes to things closer to home. Sunrise swim at Tallebudgera Creek? Sure. Long lunch at a Burleigh rooftop bar? Don’t mind if we do. You can even book a staycation – from boutique motels in Miami to eco cabins tucked into the hinterland, there are plenty of places that will give you that “holiday mode” feeling without needing to pack a suitcase.
Day trips are your new mini-getaways
Craving a change of scene? Hop in the car. Within an hour or two, you can be sipping wine in the Scenic Rim, wandering the Tweed Regional Gallery, or hiking through waterfalls at Springbrook. Pro tip: turn off your phone’s notifications and pretend you’re “overseas” – no one needs to know you’re only 45 minutes down the highway.
Eat like you’re abroad
One of the best parts of travelling is the food – but who says you need a boarding pass to taste the world? Hunt down authentic eats right here. Go for banh mi in Southport, handmade pasta in Burleigh, or dumplings in Broadbeach. You could even pick a different “destination” each weekend – tapas crawl, Thai feast, sushi train — and make a night of it.
Build your own highlights reel
You don’t need the Eiffel Tower to make memories worth sharing. Start a running list of “holiday at home” moments – the taco night with friends that turned into a dance party, the photo you snapped of a killer Burleigh sunset, that random Tuesday you took off work just because. String enough of those together and suddenly you’re the one everyone else is jealous of.
Slow it down (holiday pace, always)
One of the best parts of travelling is how it forces you to slow down – and you don’t need to hop on a flight to get that feeling at home. Swap your usual morning scroll for a beach walk, finally try that pottery class, or spend a lazy afternoon hanging out in a hammock with a book. The trick is treating your time here with the same sense of novelty you would in Tahiti or Tulum.
Remember…
Not travelling isn’t missing out – it’s a chance to fall in love with your own backyard. Less time in airports, more time at beach bars. Less stress, more spritzes. And the best part? No 24-hour flight home.
