Summer skincare tips with Saor Skin
Summer is right around the corner, and our skin needs to warm up (safely, of course). Given the rates of skin cancer in Queensland are the highest in the country, we’re getting our summer skincare tips from an expert.
That’s why we caught up with Saor Skin founder Christine Walsh.
“Saor was born from a desire to offer products that are safe, toxin-free and beneficial for the whole family, including my husband and children,” says Christine.
With no hidden, harmful substances, Saor’s focus extends to nurturing the skin’s natural microbiome, striving to develop genuinely ‘microbiome-friendly’ products.
“In my research, I found it confronting to uncover the hidden toxins in many products from well-known brands,” says Christine. “Even more concerning was discovering brands falsely claiming their products are ‘microbiome-friendly,’ using this term merely as a marketing gimmick despite contradictory ingredients.
“This revelation fuelled my commitment to ensure Saor stands for honesty and transparency. We want our customers to have complete confidence in their purchases, understanding how their investment benefits their skin.”
Saor has been meticulously developed using ingredients specifically chosen for their efficacy in addressing inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. In addition to targeting these concerns, the formulation places a significant emphasis on providing intense hydration to the skin, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive skincare solution.
So, with all of this in mind, what are Christine’s expert tips for caring for your skin this summer? Read on…
As we head into summer, what skin concerns should we be aware of?
Although we all enjoy this time of year, it also entails spending more time outdoors, which means more exposure to harmful elements for our skin. Here are some tips to keep your skin healthy and safe this summer:
- Always apply sunscreen when going outside, regardless of whether the sun is visible or not. Australia has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world, so it’s essential to protect yourself from harmful UV rays. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and non-comedogenic to avoid clogging your pores.
- Sun exposure can temporarily clear up breakouts and pimples but can also trigger the secretion of sebum, the oily substance, in excess that causes acne. During summer, wash your face more often if you find yourself sweating and limit your exposure. Saor’s gentle postbiotic cleanser is perfect for this as it is microbiome-friendly and won’t dry out your skin it will help retain moisture.
- Dry, irritated skin can be caused by exposure to the sun, air conditioning, and swimming pools. Keep your skin hydrated throughout the summer, always use moisturiser and drink plenty of water. Saor’s postbiotic moisturiser and serum will penetrate the layers of skin to lock in moisture and keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
- If you have melasma, keep your sunscreen on, stay in the shade, and wear protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats to avoid triggering it.
- Beware of the social media filters. Don’t believe everything you see on social media, especially when it comes to celebrities and their flawless skin. Embrace your own skin and love your body, every bump, lump, and scar. Holding yourself to unrealistic standards will only make you unhappy.
What steps should we start taking now to prepare our skin for summer?
Every year, our skin endures varying environmental stresses, and as we approach the summer months, it’s crucial to kickstart a regimen focusing heavily on hydration.
Hydration is key – both internally and externally. Ensure you’re drinking plenty of water to maintain the skin’s moisture balance from within. This internal hydration is a cornerstone of healthy, radiant skin. Simultaneously, prioritise external hydration. Choose moisturisers that not only hydrate but also lock in that much-needed moisture.
Sun protection is absolutely non-negotiable. Make it a daily ritual to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, regardless of whether the sun is boldly shining or hiding behind clouds. Remember, UV rays can penetrate through overcast skies and still cause significant damage to the skin.
Let’s not forget about our lips – they’re part of our skin too! They often get neglected, so using a lip balm with SPF protection is vital to shield against the sun’s harsh rays.
Regular exfoliation, about once to twice a week, is essential. It helps slough off dead skin cells, paving the way for a smoother, more radiant complexion. This enhances your skin’s natural glow and boosts the efficacy of hydrating products by allowing better absorption.
Preparing our skin for summer isn’t just about looking good; it’s about practising diligent skincare to maintain healthy, resilient skin through the season.
What ingredients should we look for when buying summer skincare, and why?
For Australian consumers facing the strong sun and unique environmental conditions of an Aussie summer, selecting skincare products with the right ingredients is crucial.
Here are the key ingredients to look for:
- Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen Ingredients provide UVA and UVB radiation protection. For effective UV protection, look for sunscreens with SPF 30 or higher. Keep in mind that the Australian sun can be especially severe, so regular application is necessary.
- Antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and niacinamide help combat free radical damage induced by pollution and UV exposure. Vitamin C’s ability to brighten the complexion and reduce the appearance of sun-induced pigmentation is particularly advantageous.
- Aloe vera, which is renowned for its calming properties, is ideal for alleviating sun-exposed skin and providing lightweight hydration.
- Lightweight, non-comedogenic oils, such as jojoba and rosehip, can hydrate and nourish the skin without obstructing pores.
- Ceramides and peptides to help maintain the skin barrier and repair any sun damage, search for ingredients like ceramides and peptides that strengthen the skin’s natural barrier and support collagen production.
What would an ideal summer skincare routine look like, for AM and PM?
My current skin routine is literally based on ”skinimalism”; less is more as my time is valuable at the moment.
AM- Saor postbiotic cleanser, followed by Saor postbiotic serum and Soar postbiotic moisturiser. Eco Tan face sunscreen SPF30
PM- Saor postbiotic cleanser, followed by Saor postbiotic serum and Soar postbiotic moisturiser.
What treatments, if any, do you recommend people do in summer?
I am the biggest fan of a nice hydrating facial. I will always treat myself to this at least once every two months, not just during summer.
What, if any, are the common myths or wives’ tales about skincare, especially in summer?
It is a dangerous myth to believe that you only need to apply sunscreen once. SPF must be reapplied every two hours when you are out in the sun.
Also, it is a misconception that sunscreen is only necessary on sunny days. In fact, sunscreen should be applied daily, even during the winter months, as the UV index is what matters, not the visibility of the sun.
