How to dress when it’s hot
Every year, it’s the same – winter bids us farewell, the temperatures creep upwards, and we sit, sweating, in front of our wardrobes, the same question echoing in our brain… “What the hell do I wear in this heat?”.
As Queenslanders, you’d think we’d have mastered the art of summer dressing by now. But no – the warm weather rolls back around and we all come down with a bad case of outfit amnesia.
It’s exhausting, but we’re in it together. And lucky for you, we’ve curated the perfect guide to see you through to May.
So before you reach for your activewear (or spend another day in your favourite cotton PJs), consider these simple tips…
Find your summer superhero
Perhaps the worst part of getting dressed in summer? Trying things on. Eliminate the guess work with your summer superhero – an item of clothing that you know will work, no matter where you’re wearing it. It could be a dress, a shirt or a pair of pants. What matters is that it’s flattering, it’s comfortable, and it can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Bonus points if it’s easy to wash, because you’ll be wearing it non-stop.
Consider composition
Not all fabrics are created equal – some (like linen and cotton) are much more breathable than others (like synthetics). But choosing the perfect material for summer is not just a matter of natural vs. synthetic; after all, your favourite jeans and woollen jumper are both made from natural fibres. Looking at the care tag is a great place to start. Check for linen and cotton blends that feature viscose, Tencel or a hint of elastane. Then, check the weave of the fabric – open weaves like poplin and seersucker will allow air to circulate and sit away from the skin. There’s nothing worse than a clingy shirt on a hot day.
Bikinis over bras
One of the good things about summer? Wearing your swimwear 24/7 – there are so many benefits! For one thing, a bikini top is so much more comfortable than a wired bra. You can also get away with your skimpier clothing items (beach cover ups, halter tops, sarong skirts) if you give off the impression that you’re on your way to, or from, the beach. Plus, you’ll actually be ready to dip in the ocean at a moment’s notice.
Layer creatively
Winter layering offers so many opportunities to play with your style – in summer, all creativity goes out the window (aided by your overworked ceiling fan). Instead of layering with jumpers and jackets like you would in winter, try pairing fun socks with your shoes, wearing two camisoles instead of one, or stacking a ton of bracelets and necklaces when you want to feel dressed up. When the heat is all-consuming, focus on the little details.
Hair and makeup maketh the look
They say ‘clothes maketh the man’, but in hot weather, we need to rely on other sources of inspiration. A pop of lipstick or an intentional slick-back can add polish to your outfit – without adding heat. In fact, committing to a styled updo before leaving the house can help you avoid that overstimulated hair tie hunt when the heat gets too much. Accessories like scrunchies, hair claws and silk scarves make the look feel intentional (not just crucial).
