Maybe your walls are looking a little bare. Maybe you’re over the mass-produced prints that everyone has. Or maybe you’ve always loved the idea of owning original art but assumed it was totally out of your price range. Whatever your reason, buying art doesn’t have to be intimidating – or expensive.
In fact, this weekend’s Affordable Art Fair in Brisbane is the perfect place to dip your toe into the incredibly chic world of art collecting – all without the snobbery or sky-high price tags.
“Over the past year, Australia has undergone quite the cultural shift – driven by a growing environmental consciousness, a desire for authenticity, and a renewed appreciation for joy in everyday moments,” says Stephanie Kelly Gordine, Australian Fair Director for the Affordable Art Fair. “Unsurprisingly, these changes are flowing through into the art world.”
According to Stephanie, we’re seeing a continued love for expressive abstracts – bold colour palettes and fluid forms whirled together to deliver a visual dopamine hit. Collectives like The Breathing Room are nailing the brief, sparking emotion, reflection and personal connection.
“Meanwhile, there’s a strong pull toward nature-inspired works, with the Australian landscape emerging as a key motif,” adds Stephanie. “Jessica Davidson’s ethereal oil paintings, for example, offer a nostalgic yet fresh take on both real and imagined scenes.”
So whether you’re looking for a bold statement piece, a conversation starter or just something that feels very you, Stephanie is sharing everything you need to know to confidently buy art.
“After all, our fair is all about making original, high-quality art accessible while offering a relaxed, welcoming space to discover pieces that speak to you – no matter your taste, budget or experience level.”
How to buy a piece of art…
- Consider your style: How should the artwork complement your décor? Consider a bold graphic print to spruce up a sparse room or bring some Zen to a cluttered space with a calming abstract.
- Set your budget: Knowing how much you want to spend can help you focus. You’re more likely to find a limited edition print for under $250 than a painting or sculpture but you never know, plus many galleries have walls dedicated to art under $1000.
- Immerse yourself: Make sure you explore the whole Fair and across the weekend as many galleries refresh their walls each day. Go aisle by aisle or A – Z to see thousands of affordable artworks.
- Take a minute to think: There’s so much to entertain yourself with while you ponder; take some time out in the café, have a drink at the Bird in Hand wine bar or join a workshop. Talk it over with a friend or one of our art experts before deciding.
- Ask questions: The most exciting part of collecting art is learning about the artist and their work. Speak to the gallerists – they’re as passionate about art as you are.
- Follow your heart: Finding the perfect artwork is like falling in love. If you’re still thinking about that piece, you know you’ve found the one for your walls. There is no better reason to purchase and it means you’ll enjoy it for years to come.
