What was once a local secret has become one of the fastest-changing suburbs on the Gold Coast – but Palmy locals will always know it as “a warm place with warm people” (just as the welcome sign says). From new faces to old favourites, find out where to eat, drink and relax in one of the southern Gold Coast’s most beloved neighbourhoods.
Where to eat in Palm Beach
Whether it’s late-night bites or sustenance for the morning after, Palm Beach has it all. Canvas has you covered if you’re after an indulgent breakfast that won’t break the bank – especially if you have your dog in tow. Speaking of which, Dune Cafe (next to Pirate Park at the Currumbin Creek inlet) is another one of our favourite dog-friendly cafes, as well as being one of the most scenic breakfast spots on the whole Gold Coast.
Matcha lovers already know Palm Beach well – it’s home to ’94 Cafe, the Gold Coast’s unofficial home of matcha. Don’t let the queue put you off; it moves quickly, and their offering (not just matcha, but coffee, too) is well worth the wait. If it’s no-frills coffee you’re after, head just down the road to Vegepatch – the ‘if you know, you know’ hole-in-the-wall cafe that’s become a well-loved local hangout.
If it’s later in the day and you’re seeking sustenance, you’re also spoilt for choice. Lunch spots include Scott’s Luncheonette (the best sandwiches), Palm Beach Seafoods (the best fish and chips) and Las Palmas (the best cocktails), while places like Madame V, The Deli by Pepe and Balboa do levelled-up dinner service. The all-new Franc Jrs (with its deservedly-hyped pizza menu) and Twins (with their crowd-pleasing smash burgers) deserve a mention, too.
You can even keep the night going at Suga, Palmy’s cosy dive bar, or the Palm Beach Surf Club, which always draws a crowd.
Where to shop in Palm Beach
It’s well-known for its beaches (and nowadays, as a dining destination), but did you know that Palm Beach is also home to some hidden gem boutiques? For lovers of thrifting and op-shop hunting, Palmy offers the perfect second-hand circuit – start at Lifeline on Palm Beach Avenue, head down the road to Vinnies, turn right around the corner for Recycled (poking your head in to see the ethical and sustainable curation at Hand On My Heart), then walk two blocks north to Salvo’s on Eighth Avenue.
Things to do in Palm Beach
Much like its American namesake, Palm Beach has a definite ‘sit back and relax’ kind of vibe. Sure, the beaches are pristine, but the creeks (yes, plural) are just as beautiful. Driving in from the north, it’s hard to miss Tallebudgera Creek – this idyllic ocean inlet is the best place to spend the day if you’re sick of the surf or want to entertain the little ones (refueling with treats from Neptune Kiosk, of course). And who could forget Currumbin Creek in the suburb’s south? Whether you’re whiling away an afternoon or kayaking upstream, Currumbin Creek is pretty much paradise.
In good news for pet parents, both creeks have nearby dog beaches.
And Palm Beach is more than just a foodie haven – it’s also turning into a wellness hotspot (literally, and figuratively). With the opening of House of Motion (hot Pilates) and The Daily (a wellness space with saunas, hot and cold pools and remedial massage) – in addition to existing favourites like Ritual Studios, NBHD. HOT and Upstate Studios – Palm Beach locals are in good hands.
