Welcome to ‘scout about’, our series exploring the small (but mighty) regional towns around the Gold Coast. In this instalment, we’re driving just under an hour from the Gold Coast to Bangalow, Byron’s often (unfairly) overshadowed hinterland counterpart. Here are a few reasons to add Bangalow to your ‘must visit’ list, and what to do when you’re there.
Why visit Bangalow?
If you love the vibe of Byron Bay but could do without the influencer traffic jam, Bangalow might be for you. This little hinterland town, just a 15-minute drive from Byron, serves up all the charm without the chaos – think heritage buildings, lush green surrounds and an unmistakable air of “I just found the best-kept secret.”
Stroll down Bangalow’s main street and you’ll pass chic boutiques, old-school bakeries and treasure-filled antique shops (more on those in a moment). Through the back alleys and side streets, even more wonders await you.
From the local history of the Bangalow Heritage House Museum to the laidback Bangalow Bowlo (a favourite for locals and blow-ins to enjoy a cold drink, barefoot bowls and even a great gig or two), this small town really does have something for everyone. And Hotel Bangalow, at the top of the main street, is where they all come together.
Beyond Bangalow, there’s even more to explore. Whether you’re there for a day or a few nights, Bangalow is the perfect jumping off point to explore the area. Take a scenic hinterland drive, hike the nearby walking trails or take a dip in Killen Falls, just a 15-minute drive from town.
