We probably don’t need to educate you on the benefits of filling your wardrobe with pre-loved pieces – by now, you know that it’s the more affordable, sustainable and, arguably, fun, way to shop. But have you thought about shopping second-hand for your children, or the kids in your life?
Isobel (Issy) Dear and Lana Sciasci certainly did. And based on conversations with the customers and sellers at their popular Brisbane event, Love Me Again Market, countless other people did too.
“Over time, we noticed a growing demand from our community for a kids’ market,” says Issy. “So many parents were saying they wanted to sell and shop for kids’ clothing and essentials. That’s how Mini+Me was born.”
Taking place on the first Sunday of every month – from 8am to 12pm at Love Me Again’s Milton and Morningside locations – Mini+Me has fast become a favourite among Brisbane parents (and child-free shoppers, too).
But why? And are there any expert tips for shopping pre-loved like an expert? We caught up with Issy and Lana to find out.
Love Me Again Market enters motherhood
It’s no secret that second-hand shopping has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity over the last few years, particularly for women. Just look at the success of Love Me Again Market.
But children’s clothing has been relatively neglected – until now.
“We think part of the reason is convenience,” says Lana. “Parents are busy, and second-hand kids’ items haven’t always been easy or accessible. We wanted to change that by creating a well-organised space where parents can just wheel in their suitcase and sell their kids’ wardrobe – and their own, at the same time.”
Mini+Me is convenient for shoppers, too. Easy parking, pram access and a welcoming, friendly environment are just some of the features that make it easy for parents to take their time browsing the racks. They say it’s not just about shopping – it’s an opportunity for families to come together, share stories and set an example for future generations.
“By making it easier to shop and sell second-hand, we’re giving families a sustainable, budget-friendly way to keep up with growing kids,” says Lana. “And based on the response, it’s something the community has been waiting for!”
Issy and Lana’s tips for shopping second-hand kids’ clothes
If you’re new to second-hand shopping and not sure where to start (or how to maximise your time before tantrums ensue), follow these expert tips:
- Know what you need: Check your kids’ current sizes and make a list of items you want to find, to help you focus and stay on track.
- Look for quality: Both Love Me Again and Mini+Me are well known for their quality labels, so you’ll be able to find lots of items that are both trendsetting and durable.
- Buy for the next size or season up: One of the perks of shopping pre-loved is that you can find a range of sizes and items out of season. Plan ahead and when you find a great deal, you’ll be prepared for growth spurts.
- Come in with an open mind: You never know which gems you’ll find second-hand, so be open to discovering new styles and labels.
Hot topics: The brands and trends to watch
Just like with women’s clothing, children’s clothes are also subject to the trend cycle. So which brands, materials and styles should you keep an eye out for?
“Our markets feature an ever-changing selection of premium brands, including Country Road, Purebaby, Seed, Jamie Kay, By Billie, Gorman, and Bonds,” says Issy. “Current trends include natural fibres like linen, cotton and wool, along with a mix of neutral earthy tones and playful bright prints.”
