We’re not sure about you, but we plan on spending as much time as possible outdoors this year. Whether we’re enjoying a picnic, reading a good book or playing outdoor games with friends, these are the parks and gardens on the Gold Coast we’ll be doing it in.
Gold Coast Botanic Gardens, Benowa
We couldn’t talk Gold Coast gardens without mentioning the Botanic Gardens. Given how close it is to the hustle and bustle of Surfers Paradise, the abundance of plant and animal life will surprise you. There is also so much to see and do here (from the butterfly garden to the freshwater wetlands and even an endangered plant trail) so you could easily spend a day, or two, getting lost here.
Burchill Park, Nerang
Ever been heading south on the Pacific Motorway and noticed an impossibly green, picturesque park around Nerang? That’s Burchill Park, and it’s a bit of a hidden gem (unless you’re local to the area). Featuring huge, almost cartoon-like trees and rolling green hills, there is plenty of space to kick a footy or enjoy a picnic. There’s even an off-leash dog area, so you can bring your puppy along with you.
Cascade Gardens, Broadbeach
There is no shortage of things to do at Cascade Gardens. Designed with families in mind, it features an exciting playground – complete with rock climbing, a rope bridge and a flying fox – as well as the Kokoda Memorial Walk, perfect for those looking to learn more about local history (and enjoy some light exercise). It’s riverside location makes it a perfect place for a picnic, too.
Eddie Kornhauser Recreational Reserve, Elanora
This is another hidden gem that’s well worth a visit. Whether you’re looking for a place to ride your bike, go for a walk or just hang out lakeside, this flat recreational reserve has it all. There is also a small playground, plus picnic shelters to help you make a day of it. We highly recommend.
Schuster Park, Tallebudgera
It was once part of the Schuster dairy farm, but Schuster Park offers even more than historical significance. The jungle-themed playground is a favourite for local families (especially the two two-storey mega slides) while dog owners should make a beeline for the off-leash dog exercise area. Speaking of animal-friendly activities, you may even see a few horse riders making the most of the park. At the very least, head there to enjoy the beautiful walking trails – there are a few to choose from.
Nerang National Park, Nerang
This huge, mostly undeveloped sanctuary offers hinterland beauty close to the hustle and bustle of the city. People flock here to enjoy horse riding, cycling and walking, with so many tracks winding through dry rainforest and open eucalypt forests to choose from.
Burleigh Ridge Park, Burleigh
When it comes to Burleigh parks, John Laws Park and the Burleigh Heads National Park tend to steal the spotlight (can you blame them?). But did you know that there is a conservation area in Burleigh’s suburbia that is also home to beautiful flora and fauna? Check out Burleigh Ridge Park for bush walks close to home.
