Visa-free travel destinations to have on your radar

Have you heard of the Henley Passport Index? It’s the authoritative ranking of every single passport, determined by the number of destinations their holders can access visa-free – and in 2024, they ranked Australia sixth.

At least, we’re tied for sixth. But we’re in good company, sharing the spot with Poland, Czechia, and our Kiwi friends across the pond. Better yet, it’s our highest position since 2015.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Australian passport holders can access 189 countries without pre-applying for a visa. Ahead of us in the top spot are France, Germany, Italy and Japan, to name a few, who can all access 194 – so we’re not too far behind.

But with such great power comes great responsibility – a responsibility to travel as far and wide (and paperwork-free) as you possibly can, that is. Here are just a few of the top visa-free travel destinations worth adding to your ‘must visit’ list this year.

Mexico

Whether you head straight to the coast or get lost in the hustle and bustle of its heaving cities, Mexico is a travel destination like no other. History buffs will love exploring ruins from ancient civilisations, while foodies will swoon at the fresh, authentic Mexican cuisine.

Secret tip: The art museums of Mexico City aren’t often spoken about, but well worth a visit.

Saint Lucia

The Caribbean is obviously tropical paradise, but St Lucia is particularly special. It was given a nod on the Lonely Planet’s ‘Best In Travel 2024’ list… and for good reason. Not only do its pristine, postcard-worthy beaches make it an unforgettable honeymoon destination – Saint Lucia also boasts rich cultural heritage and a thriving creative scene that you’ll happily get lost in.

Secret tip: Splash the cash for a private island tour. It will be well worth it.

Slovenia

Travel TikToker @syndtheexplorer travelled through every Balkan country in a year, and ultimately, Slovenia came out on top. Why? From the fairytale canals of Ljubljana to other-worldly Lake Bled, Slovenia is one of those countries that must be experienced to be believed.

Secret tip: Friendly, relaxed and perfect for adventurers, Bovec is a little-known city that is bursting with things to do.

Cook Islands

Just a six-hour flight from Australia, the Cook Islands offer a slice of South Pacific paradise that feels worlds away but is surprisingly close to home. Made up of 15 islands scattered across dazzling turquoise waters, this laidback nation is all about slow living, friendly locals and breathtaking natural beauty. Whether you’re snorkelling in Aitutaki’s impossibly blue lagoon, exploring Rarotonga’s lush interior or simply sipping a cocktail with your toes in the sand, it’s the kind of place that invites you to truly unwind.

Secret tip: For a glimpse of local life, time your visit with a church service on Sunday morning – the singing alone is worth the early wake-up.

Argentina

From the sultry tango halls of Buenos Aires to the soaring peaks of Patagonia, Argentina stretches across nearly three million square-kilometres of dramatic, diverse terrain. It’s a country where glacier-fed lakes meet red rock deserts, and gaucho culture still thrives on the open plains. Whether you’re sipping Malbec in Mendoza, hiking to the edge of a glacier in El Calafate or marvelling at the thundering Iguazú Falls, Argentina is a feast for the senses.

Secret tip: Most people head south for Patagonia, but don’t overlook the north – the colourful hills of Purmamarca and Salinas Grandes salt flats feel like another planet.

Tanzania

Choosing just one ‘must-visit destination’ in Africa feels impossible, but Tanzania would certainly be top of the list. Take a safari through the Serengeti, tour Zanzibar’s Stone Town and night markets or explore lush mountain towns like Lushoto. While this isn’t *techincally* one of Australia’s visa-free travel destinations, you can apply for and receive a visa upon arrival at the airport.

Secret tip: Time your visit with the Great Migration in September for a true bucket list experience.

Portugal

Fans of beautiful architecture, rich culture and delicious food should already have Portugal at the top of their travel list. Lisbon is the most popular (and populous) city for a reason, but lesser-known cities like Porto, Braga and Sintra should certainly be on your radar, too.

Secret tip: Known as the Hamptons of Portugal, Comporta is closer to Lisbon than the more-popular Algarve and is just as beautiful (but way less crowded).

Scotland

Rich in history and culture, don’t let Scotland’s gloomy weather deter you – there is so much to explore here. Cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow are a tonne of fun, while the castles and lochs of the highlands are where Scotland’s history really shines.

Secret tip: Don’t miss the Culloden Battlefield. Even if you’re not into history, it is key to understanding Scottish culture, tradition and pride.
