Maybe it’s the drizzly weather or the buzzy new releases, but we’re in the mood for a movie. And here on the Gold Coast, there are plenty of places to catch them.
Yatala Drive-In
There’s no cinema experience quite like the Yatala Drive-In. The iconic outdoor cinema opened in 1974 (originally as the Beenleigh Drive-In), and has added two additional screens in the years since. Bring your pillows and blankets, or a few outdoor chairs, nibble on snacks and hot food from the on-site 50’s diner, and enjoy the show in the comfort of your own car. So fun!
Nerang Cinemas
Proof that good things come in small packages, Nerang Cineplex is the Gold Coast’s beloved neighbourhood cinema doing exactly what it needs to – screening the latest releases at prices that won’t make you wince. Reviewers rave about the easy parking, wallet-friendly snacks and choc tops, popcorn and slushies that won’t set you back a small fortune. Cosy, unpretentious and charming, you can see why this one’s a local favourite.
Cinebar Coolangatta
Dinner, drinks and a movie – and all without leaving your seat. Cinebar Coolangatta, tucked inside The Strand just across from Coolangatta Beach, takes the movie-watching experience up a notch with plush leather recliners, restaurant-quality meals delivered straight to you, and a boutique lounge bar that sets the tone from the start. Catch the latest blockbusters in state-of-the-art laser projection and sound. Date night = sorted.
The Star
This is not your average movie theatre. The Star Gold Coast primarily plays host to big-name artists and live shows – so when it screens films on Monday nights, you’re watching on a stage built for spectacle. Star Club Members get in for free, and non-members just $5. Blockbuster sound, seriously impressive digs, and a casino right downstairs – all for the price of a coffee? We’re so there.
HOTA
The Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts (HOTA) is known, and loved, for its art exhibitions and live shows – but did you know you can catch a movie there, too? The Gold Coast’s beloved arts precinct screens an eclectic mix of arthouse, independent and international films alongside select mainstream releases. Why not grab a drink from the licensed Arts Cafe and take it in with you? Surrounded by parklands with the Surfers Paradise skyline as the backdrop, it’s yet another reason to pay HOTA a visit.
Event Cinemas
The go-to for new releases on the Gold Coast, Event Cinemas has locations at Pacific Fair, Robina Town Centre and Coomera – it’s fourth, Australia Fair in Southport, is set to close on May 24. Conveniently located inside major shopping centres, it’s an easy yes for a spontaneous movie run. Upgrade to Gold Class for leather recliners and table service, or go Vmax for a screen so big it basically swallows you whole. And never skip the candy bar.
Movies Under the Stars
The best things in life are free – and the City of Gold Coast’s Movies under the Stars program is proof. This beloved community initiative screens family-friendly films at parks and open spaces right across the city, with no tickets required. Pack a picnic blanket, round up the crew, and show up ready for a fun, family-friendly night out. It runs September through April, so keep an eye on the schedule and lock it in for next season.
