It’s easy to feel dull in winter – especially when we’re rugged up in bulky clothes. One simple solution? Jewellery. But which pieces should you invest in? To get the low-down on winter jewellery trends, we spoke to Amber Hodgman, head of Medley Jewellery.
How can jewellery add a bit of sparkle when we’re wearing multiple layers?
I feel you! This is where a great curated ear comes into play. Think high pony or low sleek bun, rolled-neck cashmere, jeans and an oversized vintage blazer. Diamond earrings, especially our helix earrings, let your ears steal the show in a cool-girl kind of way. It personalises your style, even when you are rugged up from the neck down.

What jewellery trends will we be seeing this winter?
Curvature, boldness, mixed materials, and motifs. We are seeing a move away from bohemian and into a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic. There’s a resurgence of sixties and seventies influences, especially in terms of scale and gemstones.
Our chunky ball huggies are a fun throw back. I spotted them on a noughties episode of ‘Sex and the City’ and they were already vintage by that point. At Medley, we have been referencing the 70’s curved and clean lines and getting less nostalgic about star-signs pendants.

What staple pieces should we invest in now to see us through not only winter, but into spring/summer and for years to come?
Ideally there are three foundational pieces everyone will have in their jewellery styling collection.
- A classic chain: One that’s thin enough to add pendants but large enough that you can see it from afar. The Italians are the best at making chains so. if you can, opt for one made in Italy. Paperclip chains are a must have!
- A semi-bold sleeper or huggie: In earrings, if your budget permits, opt for solid gold.
- A stacker ring: Dainty enough that you can stack with others or wear alone. If you select a larger size, you can do both your middle finger or your thumb.
The eternal question: Is it ever okay to mix metals? And, if so, do you have any tips for doing it properly?
Yes! I love mixing metals. We actually wrote a blog about this very topic – see below for a snippet (check out it out here for a few more tips).
This is the part where we break the golden rule of jewellery styling (who has time for rules, anyway?). To ensure your mixed-metal stack looks effortless and intentional, even out your metals: for instance, layer even amounts of gold and silver bracelets. You can play with a combination of jewellery designs throughout your mixed-metal stack: our chunky and paperclip bracelets and curve bangles are perfect for creating a bold colour-blocked look. Mixing your metals also presents plenty of opportunities to play, so experiment with mixing your colours, your textures, and your styles, for a completely individual look.
Are there any other jewellery myths we can bust?
‘You need piercings to create a curated ear look’. You don’t! I love using ear cuffs or connector chains to bluff those extra piercings! A lot of the team have two piercings or less. We have a guide on how to fake piercings here.
Let’s ask each Medley team member: What is your staple winter piece going to be, and why?
- Amber: A classic pendant necklace like our diamond engravable necklace in 10k goldto wear over turtlenecks for a effortlessly chic look.
- Jacqui: A statement bracelet to add a little edge to my long sleeves, like our chunky ball bracelet in silver.
- Elizah: Earrings charms to add some sparkle to my winter wardrobe!
- Shanyce: I love wearing diamonds with my winter essentials, I have been loving the statement ring, like our diamond pave boyfriend ring.
- Donna: I wear my diamond letter necklaceall year round, no matter the season. It’s a classic trans-seasonal piece.
- Amba: In winter I tend to wear a lot of knits and turtle necks, so my go-to piece is a chunky pair of hoops that add some bling to my outfit. I have been loving the Maxi Dome Hoops.
- Milan: I love a curated ear all year round. I am always wearing multiple pieces with a combination of helix jewelleryand my go-to paperclip diamond stud.
Any other tips before you go?
The thing about jewellery is that it is very trans-seasonal, and a lot of the time investment pieces that you can own for years to come. For this reason, jewellery also makes an incredible gift or self-gift that adds lasting value to your everyday outfit.
