What to do when the weather gets (slightly) cold
The sun is rising later, the skies are clearer and there’s a definite chill in the air. It can only mean one thing: winter is coming, and we’re ready to embrace it. Okay, okay, okay – there’s only so much winter we can actually embrace on the GC. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try… Here’s what to do in winter on the Gold Coast.
Hit the ice bar
This is literally the coolest place in town. Coming straight from Melbourne, Ice Bar is the ultimate winter experience in the heart of Surfers. Your standard $45 ticket will get you access to both bars (which are made entirely of ice), plus your snow gear and a cocktail. We promise: you’ve never been to a bar quite like this one.
Go to the mountains
If you want to really feel like the seasons are changing, you have to hit the hinterland – specifically, Tamborine. From the cosy UK-style pubs to the comfort foods found along Gallery Walk – all while crunching autumn leaves under your feet – Tamborine Mountain is the easiest way to enjoy winter escape.
Extend your stay in a cabin
Feel like one day in the mountains just isn’t enough? Book a cabin or cottage and embrace the cold with a relaxing minibreak. From tiny homes to eco cottages – including one with its own swimmable pond – there are plenty to choose from in and around the Gold Coast.
Wake up for sunrise
There’s no denying it: winter sunrises are spectacular. The best part is, you don’t need to wake up ridiculously early to see them. Unlike during summer (when the sun rises at the ungodly hour of 4.30am), the sun comes up at around 6.30am in winter. Grab a coffee and watch it from the sand, or schedule an outdoor workout at around the same time.
Cosy up by the fire
No fireplace? No worries. There are actually a few venues around town that boast crackling fires, perfect for cosying up with a mug of hot chocolate (or something a little stronger). From seasonal activations like the one at Robina Pavilion, to more permanent fixtures like you’ll find at Sanctuary Cove, there are plenty to choose from.
