Your summer bucket list

  47. Switch your beachside stroll for a walk through the Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area
  48. Enjoy a summer wine tasting at Witches Falls on Tamborine Mountain (or one of these other nearby wineries)
  49. Go to a brewery – we’re spoilt for choice here on the Goldy

Join the (run) club

Have you made a New Year’s Resolution to ‘run more’, but you’re wondering how to commit? Look for help. Joining a group is the perfect way to stay motivated (and actually enjoy running) and there are plenty to be found on the Goldy. Here are the best Gold Coast run clubs…

Sana Days

If you love the mental workout running offers just as much as the physical, you’ll love Sana Days. This wellbeing organisation hosts a Tuesday morning run club, kicking off at Neptune Kiosk at Tally at 5am. Walk, jog, sip or dip – the Sana team strongly believes that you’ll feel the benefits just by showing up.

445 Run Club

At 4.45am every Friday – rain, hail or shine – this community club meets at Salt Mill for a 40-minute group run. Show up, run, jog or walk with the group, then hang around afterwards for a cheeky coffee and ocean swim. We can’t think of a better way to start the weekend… Can you?

The Salt Social

Love Salt Mill, but prefer to get your run done earlier in the week? Salt Social is for you. They meet at Salt Mill at 5.15am on a Tuesday morning, and don’t mind how far you run – so long as you try to stick around for a coffee and a chat after you’re done.

Daf Run Club

Looking for something a little further north – and with a more comfortable start time? Daf Run Club is for you. Meeting at Kurrawa Surf Club in Broadbeach at 6am on a Wednesday morning, they run three or five kilometres together before heading to Elk Espresso for a post-run breakfast. And if that won’t get you there, nothing will.

Hedges Run Club

What started as a group of friends meeting up at 5am on a Wednesday morning for a run, coffee and ocean dip has evolved into one of the Gold Coast’s most popular run club – but, as they say, it’s even more than that. Hedges Run Club focuses on connection as well as mental and physical health, offering support before, during and long after a run.

Gold Coast Runners Club

Meeting every Sunday morning at Burleigh’s Justin’s Park, the Gold Coast Runners Club appeals to locals and visitors, experienced and beginner runners, and runners fast and slow. It’s all about showing up and showing yourself what you can do, in one of the most beautiful running destinations in the world.

A true running community, Gold Coast Run Co. consists of four running groups – the primary school Whippets, the 12-18yo Junior Squad, the Main Beach/Burleigh run clubs and the High-Performance squad. Parkrun

Less of a running club, parkrun is more of a worldwide sensation. The first parkrun started in London in 2004 and nowadays, it attracts more than one million runners across 21 countries. The Gold Coast was the first Aussie city to adopt the phenomenon and both parkrun (5km) and Junior parkrun (2km) have become some of the most popular running events in town.

Four fun, free ways to ring in the New Year

Ahh, New Year’s. If you’re stressing about the fact that you have no plans, listen up. We’re sharing four fun and free things to do on New Year’s Eve on the Gold Coast.

To many, New Year’s Eve is the most overrated date on the calendar. But still, it feels like if you haven’t locked in your plans by like, Halloween, you’re destined to spend NYE at home, by yourself, probably asleep by 10.30pm.

We’re here to tell you that’s not necessarily true.

Not only are there plenty of fun things to do on the Gold Coast at New Year’s Eve, but there are plenty of FREE things to do on New Year’s Eve here, too. No need to buy tickets, book accommodation or even really plan ahead.

Finally – New Year’s Eve, without the pressure.

Watch the fireworks from Burleigh Hill

Beloved as a sunset spot, Burleigh Hill is also the place to go if you’re looking for free fun on New Year’s Eve. The vibes will be high thanks to nearby parties at the Burleigh Pavilion, not to mention the many fireworks displays you’ll be able to see from about 8pm onward. Pack a blanket and a picnic dinner and settle in for a fun night. You might even want to bring some glow sticks or sparklers to really set the mood?

Hit up the Currumbin RSL

If it’s a free party you’re looking for, it doesn’t get much better than the Currumbin RSL. They’ll be throwing their New Year’s Eve festivities from 1pm onward and won’t wind up until 2am. Expect live music from DJs and local legends 42 Band, a pumping dancefloor delicious drinks flowing all night long. It’s free entry, with no bookings required. And you’ll be able to ring in the New Year with a water view on the alfresco deck, cocktail in hand.

Throw an ‘orphan’s New Year’s’ party

If you and your friends are struggling for inspiration – or you know of a few other people who don’t have plans yet – it might be time for someone to put up their hand and host. Much like ‘orphan’s Christmas’, your ‘orphan’s NYE’ party offers a place for those without concrete plans to come together and celebrate. It’s not just a case of the more the merrier, but also the more random the group, the more fun. Just make sure there are a few games or activities to keep the party going until midnight (and beyond).

Party at the Broadwater Parklands

The Broadwater Parklands are the place to be on New Year’s Eve. With not one but two fireworks displays (one at 8pm, one at midnight) the parklands will also host live music, fun activities and even food trucks to keep the party going all night long. There will be face painting and sports zones for the little ones, and selfie walls to capture the moment – oh, and it’s disco themed. It all starts at 4pm.
