The holiday season may officially be over, but we’ve still got a long weekend on the horizon that’s getting us through those first few weeks back at work! Make the most of Australia Day weekend – remember, the public holiday falls on Monday, January 28 – and enjoy one last hurrah, whether it’s a camping trip away, getting involved in one of the events in your local area or simply chucking a few prawns on the barbie.
A celebration of the rock destination that was the Gold Coast from the 1970s to 1999, ‘Let there be Rock!’ is a curated display of the stories, memorabilia, photos and footage dating back to the hey-day of hard-core rock and entertainment. Take a tour through the golden age of venues like The Playroom, Bombay Rock, The Patch, Jet Club and Fisherman’s Wharf and find some familiar faces – visitors will be sure to spot members of famed rock bands like The Ramones, Cold Chisel, INXS, The Go-Betweens and, of course, the exhibitions namesake, AC/DC.
‘Tackle the Towers’ returns for its eighth year, but this time around, expect even more fun to be had both in the surf and on the shore. One of Australia’s premier stand-up paddleboard, ocean ski and prone races, the competition continues to push athletes to their limits – this year, the long-distance course has been extended to a whopping 17km, seeing competitors battle it out from Snapper Rock to North Burleigh Hill.

The Gold Coast shines at this time of year and buzzes with holidaymakers and locals alike embracing our white sandy beaches and cooling off in our big blue sea. I always dig reading the Local Loves and getting my own tips from our local residents – where to eat, enjoy a cocktail or hang with the family. Each person writes their own tale covering most corners of our coast but one thing they have in common is a love for this city.
