The beginner’s guide to… Aqua Sculpt
Have you ever wanted to try a new sport or fitness class, but chickened out at the last minute because you didn’t know what to expect? Us too. That’s why we created our ‘Beginner’s Guide’ series. It’s a place for us to chat to founders, trainers and business owners throughout the Gold Coast. To find out what to expect, what to bring and (often most importantly) what to wear, we’re going straight to the source.
In this instalment, we chat to Nina Hirschfeld, founder of Aqua Sculpt. Read on for your beginner’s guide to float fitness…
How did you get into this sport? And when?
We launched Aqua Sculpt two years ago. I got into float fitness when I tried it while on vacation in Dubai. I immediately loved the concept and wanted to bring it to Australia.
What do you love about it?
I love that it’s predominantly outdoors, you get to experience the calming benefits of water, you get to work multiple muscle groups simultaneously (so essential do double the work out) and its fun, playful and super social. I love that I can do Aqua Sculpt with my friends, and we can have a social catch up that is wellness focused.
Who should try Aqua Sculpt?
Everyone! I wanted to make Aqua Sculpt as inclusive as possible so it’s open to all fitness levels and no prior experience is needed. Aqua Sculpt is not about perfection, it’s about trying new things, being open minded and embracing the wobbles.
What equipment do you need to bring? And what should you wear?
All equipment is provided, including your Aqua Sculpt board.
You can wear anything that you are comfortable in. Remember though, you are exercising so you do need some support. We recommend either swimwear with support or activewear that you don’t mind getting wet in. While some people can stay dry, many do get wet.
How many times per week should you do it in order to see results/improvement?
To really see improvements and results, we recommend Aqua Sculpt one to three times per week. Some people come once to enjoy it as a unique one-time experience, but our regular Aqua Sculpters who attend weekly notice real changes; they become visibly more toned, improve their balance, and build strength through the core and stabilising muscles.
Is Aqua Sculpt social?
Absolutely! Aqua Sculpt is super social. You’ll exercise together, share some giggles and experience something new together and then after most will brunch, lunch or grab a glass of wine.
How much experience is needed before the first class/session?
No experience is needed. We offer layering and modifications for beginners, intermediate and advanced participants but being a new concept our sessions are very beginner focused with 70-80% of sessions being with first timers.
What are the long-term benefits?
We always finish our Floating Pilates sessions with a Savasana, giving participants time to rest and reset. Alongside that, we also offer our floating sound bath experience. These are deeply restorative and designed to calm the nervous system, clear the mind, and promote long-term mental wellbeing.
So, while our sessions naturally focus on toning and strengthening the physical body, building core strength, improving balance, and enhancing posture, we also place equal importance on the mental health benefits. Many of our regular Aqua Sculpters have shared that they experience greater mental clarity, improved sleep, and a deeper sense of calm, alongside the physical results of a toned body and stronger core.
What would you say to someone who is interested in floating fitness, but scared to try it for the first time?
I’d say you’re not alone.
So many people feel a little nervous before their first session. But Aqua Sculpt is designed to be welcoming, playful, and adaptable for all fitness levels. You don’t need any prior experience, and we start with the basics to help you feel comfortable on the board.
The boards are wide, stable, and anchored, so you’ll feel supported. And remember, falling in is part of the fun, most people end up laughing and realising it’s not scary at all. Once you relax into it, you’ll discover a beautiful mix of challenge and calm.
What I hear most often from first-timers is: “I can’t believe I waited so long to try this.”
